New beginnings – what you can expect from us

Running the Legal Technologist has been quite a journey. From a quarterly newsletter to bi-monthly magazine, to a media company focused on people doing great things in the legal ops/tech space. It has definitely evolved over time and we have now narrowed our focus. This article gives an idea of what our focus will be and what you can expect from us in the coming year (and beyond!).

Our renewed focus

The Legal Technologist was founded to showcase people doing great things in the legal tech/ops space. At the time it seemed like the community was quite small – and this aimed to bring people together a bit more, showing what others were doing and the strides they were making. When I started the LT it felt like I was the only person in Bristol doing legal document automation. I was sure that wasn’t the case but I hoped that the LT would become the lightning rod to network with others – and start conversations about use cases and best practice.

That was seven years ago – and since then it has grown a lot. We’ve tried lots of things over that time – some successes, some epic failures. However, I’d like to think that over that time it continues to be a useful resource for those in our space. Be it to get inspiration or better understand certain topics. In a fast-moving space, we’ve tried to curate content that is useful but not overly corporate – trying to push for more personal content where we can.

Our (narrower) content focus

Our content focus will now be on personal interviews and thought leadership articles.

The interviews will showcase those people in the legal ops/tech pushing the space forward. Our main focus will be those at the coalface in law firms, in-house or consultancies – with those from legal tech companies done in a more sparing way for commercial reasons. I’m keen to tailor every interview to avoid them becoming generic one-size fits all templates – and so each interview will be unique to the person being interviewed.

For our thought leadership articles we’re looking for content that is useful and practical – something that the inspires others. It might be that it showcases a new way of thinking or doing something, helpful advice or tips, or even their personal journey or lessons learnt. Something that people can read and be uplifted by – perhaps inspired to try something different at work or approach something in a different way. All of this requires a certain level of open knowledge sharing though which I hope people are keen to do. (If it’s the first time you’ve written articles of this type we can support you in structuring and editing it.)

Our (narrower) geographical focus

When the LT started growing I believed the world was my oyster – that it opened up the possibility of taking viewpoints from people in the space anywhere in the world. As someone that has travelled to 37 countries I relished the possibility of hearing or reading insights from somewhere new in the world (and still do). However, the issue is that the general focus means we were only really skimming the surface – we didn’t have the resources to deep dive into new up-and-coming markets and showcase them properly. I imagine the content was a bit here and there – lacking in geographical focus.

So now our main focus will be on the UK and Europe. We will take viewpoints from elsewhere but they will be a secondary focus until we can devote the required resources to do it properly!

Conclusion

2025 certainly sees some streamlining of what we’re offering but I think that’s a good thing – we can become more focused and less distracted. Hopefully that will reflect itself in the content that we produce and publish. While I’ve steered the rudder throughout – the Legal Technologist is very much a product of many people’s hands – both those that have volunteered or invested their time to those that have contributed over the years. Please feel free to let us know why you enjoy reading or how it has helped you!

Getting in touch

Feel free to get in touch with me here or connect with me on LinkedIn here.

It’d be nice to hear from people that are looking to contribute, become commercial partner or just want to share how the LT has made a difference to them personally.
