Legal Operations Index – Jodie Hosmer


Jodie is the Legal Process Design Lead for Mills & Reeve with over 10 years’ experience as a transactional lawyer. Jodie uses her legal technology knowledge to inspire client-centric innovation in legal service delivery and champions “doing law differently” using tech and innovation. She is a blended lawyer and legal technologist who works with clients to understand their business problems, designing high quality legal products and technology services to support in solving these problems, enabling a more efficient and strategic client relationship.

During her time at Mills & Reeve, Jodie has “spotted trends and gaps to forge a path forward, not only to take charge of her own progression and career path as the firm’s first Innovation Champion, Innovation Specialist and now Legal Process Lead, but also to progress the firm’s innovation strategy and approach to legal technology”. Jodie’s contribution to driving and championing technology and innovation is “invaluable to the firm” and her achievements include:

  • Recruited the first wave of Innovation Champions to help implement innovative solutions across the firm;
  • Organised the firm’s first Innovation week to encourage engagement with tech and innovation available internally and for clients;
  • Hosted first round of legal tech talks “On the Sofa Technology” which are still accessible to all staff.
  • She has provided numerous student talks at Universities and Legal fairs “to encourage the use of legal tech not only for personal sustainability but also to obtain client excellence in a crowded marketplace”. Jodie uses her platform “to encourage lawyers of the future to embrace innovative solutions, emphasising that the time of purely transactional engagements between lawyers and clients is long gone”. ;
  • Part of team to develop the firm’s first app, “What the Tech?!” helping lawyers understand the legal technology available to them and their clients. Jodie developed the initial idea and process into the award-winning technology finder tool it is today;
  • Took part in the Global Legal Hackathon to find a solution to support clients and other businesses navigate the coronavirus climate and to strengthen the firm’s engagement and reputation for innovation;
  • Combining her legal knowledge with process design has allowed her to inspire a collaborative and solution focused service for clients. One notable successful tender
  • Jodie has also hosted hackathons for the BPP law school to inspire and educate lawyers of the future about the benefits of legal tech and process design early on in their careers. Her dedication to “sharing this message and inspiring a new generation of lawyers to implement innovation into their practices, and to utilise legal tech to offer a more effective and positive client relationship, is positively transforming the innovative future of legal services”.
  • Jodie combined her legal and legal process knowledge to inspire a collaborative and solution focused service to clients. This has led to successful solutions for key clients in which she received very positive feedback.
