How one lawyer swapped “We’ve Always Done It That Way!” for “Hey, There’s an App for That!”

Introduction: The Accidental Legal Rebel

If you’d told my law-school self that one day I’d be more excited about workflow diagrams than courtroom drama, I would have objected - emphatically and perhaps with a dramatic flourish. But here I am, a former in-house Legal Counsel who’s discovered the joys (yes, actual joys) of Legal Operations. My journey is proof that sometimes the best legal moves happen outside the norm… and sometimes with more coffee and fewer Latin phrases.

Early Career: Law School and the Myth of the One True Path

Law school, as every legal meme on the internet can attest, is a special kind of marathon. I started with grand visions: future court argument, a closet full of stylish suits, and maybe even my own HBO series (hey, a lawyer can dream). The reality? Endless textbooks, late-night study sessions fueled by vending machine snacks and cheap coffee (or was it?), and a creeping suspicion that “following supreme court rulings” meant never having an original thought before noon.

I diligently set out on the path well-trodden: clerkships, interviews, and those “where do you see yourself in five years?” questions that always made me want to say, “Someplace with fewer binders, ideally.” But the pressure to fit the mold was real, and so I pressed on… until I couldn’t any longer. Literally! Because I failed my state exam and ended up „only“ with a LL.B. (German legal education is different).

In-House Counsel: Where Memos Go to Nap

After law school, I landed a coveted in-house counsel role. The badge was cool, the coffee was free, and the policies were… endless. My days became a parade of contracts, compliance training, and the gentle thud of my forehead hitting the desk during another E-Mail thread about the difference between “may” and “shall.” I never felt like I belonged. Also because most of my colleagues were „fully qualified“ lawyers. And maybe also because I was the only one questioning traditional ways of working and asking myself why nobody even bothers about working smarter instead of harder.

Beneath the surface, I felt out of sync. Why, I wondered, were we still chasing signatures with actual pens? Why did our legal docs live in a labyrinthine folder system that even Indiana Jones wouldn’t survive? Was there really no better way?

Discovery: Enter Legal Operations…Finally, My Kind of Logic!

One fateful day (read: after a particularly soul-sucking round of “track changes”), I got the offer to take over the role of Head of Legal Operations. Since I had no clue what „Legal Ops“ even is, I jumped into the topic with fervor! I read articles and watched webinars, in which lawyers talked about optimizing processes, automating repetitive work, and - wait for it - using technology to make their lives easier. Cue the metaphorical lightbulb. Suddenly everything made sense!

Transitioning into Legal Operations was like swapping a leaky rowboat for a speedboat. Suddenly, there were tools, data, dashboards, and actual room for creativity. Instead of being the “no” person, I could be the “what if we tried this?” person. It was legal, but with upgrades.

Advantages of Legal Operations: Where Efficiency Meets Innovation (and Sanity)

Let’s face it - traditional legal roles can sometimes feel like being a walking risk disclaimer. Legal Ops, on the other hand, is about finding smarter, faster ways to do the important stuff. Imagine less “redlining by candlelight” and more “workflow automation before lunch.” We get to build solutions, break down silos, and bring the legal department out of the basement and into the 21st century. Creativity, strategic thinking, and a touch of mischief are now job requirements. Legal Ops lets you be the architect of change, rather than the gatekeeper of “what we’ve always done.”

The Rise of Legal Tech and AI: Robots Aren’t Taking Our Jobs - They’re Taking Our Paperwork

Enter Artificial Intelligence and Legal Tech, the new superheroes of the profession. AI isn’t here to steal your legal thunder - it’s here to automate those never-ending NDAs, predict contract risks, and maybe even schedule your meetings (if only it could make coffee, too). Legal Tech means more time for real legal strategy and less time playing “find the missing clause.”

With apps that manage contract lifecycles and bots that answer policy questions, lawyers can finally focus on high-impact work. The skills needed? Adaptability, prompt engineering (yes, teaching AI to understand your legalese), and a knack for reimagining how things can be done. The future lawyer is part coder, part project manager, and wholly unafraid of a spreadsheet.

Future Outlook: Adapt or Be Outpaced by the Machines (Kidding…Mostly)

Legal Operations is the place for anyone who thinks “there must be a better way.” It’s about embracing tech, leading transformation, and developing skills that will keep you indispensable - like workflow automation, data analytics, and a healthy skepticism for anything that sounds like “we’ve always done it this way.” Prompt engineering, understanding the basics of AI, and collaborating across departments are the new must-haves. Law students, take note: the Latin may fade, but your ability to learn new tools will make you unstoppable.

Conclusion: Why Legal Ops Is the Best Plot Twist

My journey from in-house counsel to Legal Operations Manager wasn’t straight, but it’s made all the difference. If you crave innovation, efficiency, and the thrill of solving puzzles that actually matter, Legal Ops might be your next great adventure. As for me? I’m not looking back - unless it’s to automate something I missed. So, to my fellow lawyers out there: Yes, there’s life beyond boilerplate - and it comes with better tech, fewer binders, and the occasional robot sidekick. Your next chapter awaits. All aboard the Legal Ops express!

Michael is a business lawyer (LL.M.) and Head of Legal Operations at ALDI DX. He initially worked as in-house legal counsel in various companies, before taking over the same role at ALDI DX and building the Legal Ops team there 2022. His focus lies on the agile development and implementation of Legal Tech (build vs. buy) and the strategic development of the legal department through the establishment of efficient (sometimes automated) processes and the use of artificial intelligence. He is particularly interested in metrics and KPIs as the basis of data-driven decision making.
